FAQs about rBST, rBGH, and antibiotics

Q. What are rBST and rBGH?
A. Recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) and recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) are artificial growth hormones that have been used to increase milk production in cows. We ensure that our dairy farmers do NOT use rBST or rBGH.

According to the FDA, no significant difference has been shown between milk derived from rBST-treated and non-rBST-treated cows. Milk is being tested for beta-lactam antibiotics.

Q. Why should I be concerned about antibiotics in my milk?
A. The generous use of antibiotics has given way to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  Because antibiotics given to cows can contaminate the milk, our dairy farmers must agree and pledge in writing to only provide milk that is free of antibiotics.  We test our milk for beta-lactam antibiotics.
